Awareness and teamwork save a life

It took quick thinking and action, as well as some personal intervention by three Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center team members to prevent what could have been a heartbreaking event.

In the dim light of the early morning hours on one memorable day in March, a man in distress caught the sharp eye of Maintenance team member Adele Atie. Adele discreetly informed Guest Services Representative Giselle Matias about the situation. Giselle, in turn, notified her colleague at the information desk to contact Security. In response, Service Officer Jonathan Blaise was dispatched to investigate.

Giselle observed the gentleman's behavior and saw something was wrong.  Giselle rushed towards him, urging the man to stay calm while simultaneously informing the hospital of the escalated situation. She engaged the gentleman calmly, keeping him safe until security arrived.

When Officer Blaise arrived, he promptly approached the distressed person and initiated a conversation with the man. Through compassionate dialogue, Officer Blaise persuaded him to accompany him to the Emergency Department for assistance. Safely, he transported him to the ED.
